Hugo Broos sends special appreciation to Polokwane fans

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos expressed how the support at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday evening gave him goosebumps when he entered the pitch.

South Africa beat Lesotho 2-0 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in front of a sold-out crowd. Due to their impressive recent performances, it has become a trend for the national team to play their matches in front of packed stadiums across the country.

Broos acknowledged that he felt the supporters’ presence when he entered the pitch.

“I am happy to see that we played the game in front of a full house,” Broos said. “That means that at least South Africans are starting to love this team. I have already said that a crowd is very important, especially when you play big games.

“Today [Friday] it was a difficult game. We won, and we dominated during the 90 minutes, and they didn’t have a chance to score. But on the other side, you have to score,” he added.

“In the beginning, it was normal [not to have fans) and difficult because there was COVID-19. People couldn’t come to the stadium, but when COVID-19 was finished, they also didn’t come. I asked several times for the fans to come to the stadium because we need them.

“If we play without a crowd, it’s terrible. Coming out of the dressing room and seeing an empty stadium. I got goosebumps when we came out of the dressing room, and the crowd made noise. It gives you energy. So it’s very important that you have those people in the stadium,” said Broos.

“The people in Limpopo were there, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Eastern Cape were there, so at least people are coming to the stadium to see Bafana Bafana play.”
