Khama Billiat poised for another major recognition
Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star Khama Billiat is pretty poised for major recognition as he continues to prove his worth for both his club, Scottland FC, and his country, Zimbabwe.
The 34-year-old talisman, who is now in the books of Scottland FC in Zimbabwe’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, has remained a celebrated football icon.
Most importantly, he is the highest-paid footballer in Zimbabwe, as he pockets a monthly salary of approximately R108,800 [around US$6,000].
With a respectable profile and a sterling 2024 season record when he was at Yadah FC, the former Mamelodi Sundowns forward has been nominated for the country’s Annual Sports Awards [ANSA]. The winner will be announced at a ceremony to be held in Harare on 30 March.
KHAMA BILLIAT FOR NOMINATED FOR ZIM’S ANNUAL SPORTS AWARDS
Billiat is among the 15 nominees from different sports codes for the ANSA People’s Choice Award. The purpose of the ANSA is to recognise, celebrate, and reward top sports icons in Zimbabwe.
The icons would have performed exceptionally well at national, regional, continental and in world championships.
Billiat headlines the list of nominees as the only footballer on the cast that also includes mixed martial artist Themba Gorimbo. Swimming sensation Paige Van Der Westhuizen, sprinter Tapiwanashe Makarawu and tennis Benjamin Lock are among the nominees. In addition, these awards are returning after a five-year hiatus.
Last year, Billiat was voted as the second runner-up for the Player of the Season award. In addition, he pocketed the Fan’s Player of the Year. He was behind Walter Musona, who was crowned as the 2024 Player of the Season. Lynoth Chikuhwa was the first runner-up.
Billiat had scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists for Yadah FC in his debut season in Zimbabwe. He also helped The Warriors of Zimbabwe qualify for the 2025 AFCON finals. However the 34-year-old is yet to open his scoring account for Scottland FC this season. He featured in the two games out of the three played so far.
