Victory in Soweto Derby keeps Chiefs at the summit of DDC
Kaizer Chiefs’ 1-0 victory over Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby kept Amakhosi at the summit of the DDC table, with Mamelodi Sundowns’ hopes for the title dented once again.
Aden McCarthy scored from the penalty spot in the second half, a goal that propelled the Phefeni Glamour Boys to their fifth victory in a row at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday afternoon. The defender had missed another penalty in the first half, with Pirates goalkeeper Bayanda Zulu guessing the right way.
Vela Khumalo’s men have collected 51 points from 21 matches and are one point ahead of second-placed Stellenbosch FC.
The Soweto Derby’s outcome ended the Buccaneers’ seven-match winning streak. Pirates now sit fourth on the table with 43 points after 23 games.
On Saturday, Sundowns suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of their crosstown rivals SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby.
A brace from Thabang Makubo and a goal by Tumelo Machete secured the win for Matsatsantsa, while Oarabile Booysen and Tshiamo Masisi scored for the Brazilians.
This defeat has significantly impacted the Brazilians’ hopes for the 2024/25 league title, leaving them in fifth place with 42 points after 22 matches.
Meanwhile, the Swanky Boys climbed to third in the standings with 44 points from the same number of games.
The title race got more interesting as defending champions Stellenbosch momentarily topped the league after a resounding 9-1 victory against Chippa United at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London.
However, their reign at the summit was short-lived as Chiefs secured maximum points on Sunday.
