Meshack Maphangule opens up on unsuccessful Pirates stint

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Meshack Maphangule has made an honest admission about his one-season stay at the Soweto giants.

Maphangule, older brother to Bafana Bafana‘s latest debutant, Rodney, spent the 2018/19 season with the Buccaneers.

The move came after he made a name for himself during his five-season stint at Limpopo side Black Leopards. But Maphangule struggled to break into the team at the Soweto giants, prompting a move away.

He later joined Chippa United and had a stint at Marumo Gallants and Pretoria Callies in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

“It was not as successful as one would have hoped,” Maphangule told FARPost. “But I had hoped that in the second season, things would have gotten better and improved my game because I was used to the environment at that time.”

He continued: “Look, I had the whole season at the club. But I don’t think I got more game time than I would have wanted because all the games I played in the league were mostly as a substitute. It’s only in the CAF Champions League that I started.”

“But in the league and domestic cups, there was not much game time. Most of the time I would come in as a substitute and obviously the confidence would be lower because you are not playing regularly.

“It’s unlike someone who is playing week in and week out and gains a lot of confidence. But if it’s a matter of coming in with 10, 15 or 20 minutes left, it’s not really enough to showcase what you’re capable of,” he added.

The 33-year-old is currently unattached after his departure from Chippa United last season. He has previously trained with Betway Premiership club Magesi FC, but no move materialised.

Maphangule was also at some point linked with a move back to Black Leopards.
