Broos sends warning to Bafana players after victory over Benin

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has issued a warning to his troops following their victory over Benin in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers away from home.

South Africa collected a 2-0 win against Les Guépards on Tuesday evening at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Lyle Foster and Jayden Adams were on target.

As a result, Broos’ troop solidified their spot at the summit of Group C with 13 points, having won four and drawn two of the six matches they have played so far.

They now face four remaining qualifying matches against Lesotho and Nigeria in September 2025, and Zimbabwe and Rwanda in October 2025, as they aim to qualify for the global tournament.

Bafana’s strong form has positioned them as favourites to qualify for the World Cup from their group, a sentiment echoed by Broos himself. He believes the team’s depth is a key indicator of their strength, pointing to their consistent performances even with changes in personnel.

Despite the positive momentum, Broos has cautioned his players against becoming complacent as they approach the final stages of qualification.

BROOS CAUTIONS BAFANA PLAYERS AGAINST COMPLACENCY

“We needed some time to build this group. In the beginning, when I came to South Africa, it was not so easy in the first year,” said Broos.

“There were a lot of problems, but we went and looked for the right players for all positions, and we found them. And I think now we have a very good team. Now, we can even change players, and our performances will not be affected.

“So, that means that we are strong, and we have to be confident and not be afraid of any opponent playing against us. The only thing we have to do is hard work as we have been doing till now, not thinking that everything has already been done.

But we are in a good position now. I think [looking] at our group, if we do not do stupid things, we are very close to qualifying for the World Cup.”
