How much Sundowns will earn for a win at the Club World Cup

Beyond the guaranteed participation fee of US$9.55 million [R174 million], here’s how much Mamelodi Sundowns will earn for a victory at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Sundowns are among four African countries taking part in the expanded 32-team Club World Cup. The other three are reigning African champions Al Ahly of Egypt, Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club and Tunisian giants Esperance.

The tournament will be played in the United States from June 14 to July 13, 2025. Interestingly, the winners of the four previous continental championships will take part.

While announcing a record prize money and the unprecedented solidarity to benefit club football, FIFA also revealed the amount participating clubs will receive at different stages for a win.

The winners of this year’s edition will pocket up to US$125 million [R2.2 billion]. The world’s football governing body has set aside US$1 billion [R18.2 billion] in prize money for 32 participating clubs.

In the group stages, which consist of three matches, a win would earn Betway Premiership giants Sundowns US$2 million [R36.3 million] and US$1 million [R18.1 million] for a draw. Should they progress to the round of 16, they pocket US$7.5 million [R136.7 million].

“In line with the budgetary principles for the FIFA Club World Cup and following fruitful discussions with key stakeholders, including the European Club Association, as well as the approval of the FIFA Council, FIFA has confirmed the distribution model for its new club competition. This includes USD 1 billion prize money for the 32 participating clubs. Plus a substantial and groundbreaking global solidarity model,” reads a FIFA statement.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino added: “The distribution model of the FIFA Club World Cup reflects the pinnacle of club football and represents the biggest-ever prize money for a football tournament comprising a seven-match group stage and playoff format with a potential payout of USD 125 million foreseen for the winners.”

In addition to the prize money, FIFA has an unprecedented solidarity investment programme, with a target of an additional US$250 million [R4.5 million] being provided to club football across the world.

“This solidarity will undoubtedly provide a significant boost in our ongoing efforts in making football truly global,” added FIFA.

FIFA will not retain any funding for this tournament, with all revenues set to be distributed to club football.
