Tottenham captain Archer eyeing Bafana Bafana

Tottenham Hotspur captain Samual Archer is reportedly eager to someday play for Bafana Bafana. The 18-year-old, eligible to represent South Africa, has officially signed his first professional contract with the English Premier League side.

The teenage goalkeeper was born in Hertford, England, but his mother hails from Gauteng. In a statement published on their website on Tuesday, Spurs announced: “We are delighted to announce that Samual Archer has signed his first professional contract with the Club.”

The teenager has served as captain for the club’s Under-18 team this season, consistently starting matches while also making his Under-21 debut in November against Swindon Town’s senior squad in the Bristol Street Motors tournament.

Archer started his career at his hometown club, Hertford Town, before joining the Tottenham Academy. Last season, during his first year as a full-time scholar with the north London side, he enjoyed a successful loan spell at non-league Barton Rovers.

Archer took to Instagram to express his delight over the new deal. He wrote: “Proud day for me and my family to sign my first professional contract. Grateful to God and everyone who has helped me along the way.”

‘HE’S INTERESTED IN PLAYING FOR BAFANA BAFANA’

Themba Mahlangu, who runs the SA Foreign Legion network, told FARPost that the youngster was keen on representing his mother’s country.

“He was born in England and has a South African mother,” Mahlangu said. “I’ve spoken to Sam. He still has family in Gauteng. But Sam hasn’t visited SA yet. He told me he’s interested in playing for Bafana if there’s an opportunity.”

This season, Archer has participated in 14 league matches for Spurs’ U1-8 team. The Lilywhites are in fourth position in the U-18 Premier League standings.

Interestingly, he was part of the team that faced Stellenbosch FC in the 2024 Premier League Next Gen Cup.
