‘I disappointed him’: Vusi Vilakazi breaks silence on AmaZulu departure

Former AmaZulu coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi has spoken for the first time since parting ways with the club in February 2025, revealing the person he feels he has disappointed.

‘Kanu’, as he’s popularly known, was appointed as Usuthu’s co-coach with Arthur Zwane at the beginning of the Betway Premiership campaign following the departure of coach Franco Pablo Martin.

But Vilakazi left the club for ‘personal reasons’, resulting in the Kaizer Chiefs legend Zwane becoming the sole head coach at AmaZulu.

Vilakazi disclosed that it was crucial for him to leave the club to deal with his personal matters, which he cannot reveal at the moment, but he has chosen to seek professional help to tackle his issues.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Vilakazi stated that he feels he has let down the president of AmaZulu, Sandile Zungu. He continued by saying that he had broken the trust that the Usuthu boss had in him.

He also acknowledged that his departure from AmaZulu was surprising not only for many others but also for himself.

“It was definitely shocking to be honest [when I left AmaZulu], and it was also shocking to myself as well. But I think it was very important for me so I can pay attention to a few things that have been bothering me,” said Vilakazi on Metro FM.

“You see, sometimes we act as if we can handle situations, and that’s why we are in different fields where other people are doctors, psychologists, and football coaches. So, if I think I can handle things that I should be paying attention to in terms of professional set-up [but I’m not, it is best to leave].

“So, I decided, even though I had a chat with the president in his support, I must be honest, even today he still supports me in what I’m going through. But it’s much better because I have got a few programmes that I’m following.”

Vilakazi added: “I don’t think there are specific people I should say ‘sorry to’. But maybe the person I can say sorry to is President Zungu, who supported me from the beginning when I joined the club. He’s still supporting me even now.

“He’s the person I feel maybe I disappointed with the trust that he had in me. You know, trusting me with the huge project [coaching AmaZulu]. I think I will go back to him to apologise. But I have spoken with him before. That’s the person I think he deserves my apology.”
