Sundowns to face Chiefs in Nedbank Cup semifinals

Mamelodi Sundowns have set a Nedbank Cup semifinal date with Kaizer Chiefs following their 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United in the tournament’s quarterfinals at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night.

This game was initially set to be played on March 8th at the same venue; however, it was postponed. The clash between Bafana Ba Style and Babina Noko was postponed after the PSL found that the Lucas Moripe Stadium had been double-booked, even though the PSL had obtained exclusive rights to the location through a prior agreement between the league and the stadium management.

The stadium management had also agreed to host Bantwana’s FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier against Nigeria on the same day.

Focusing on the match, Sundowns started the game in high spirits, maintaining ball possession. However, Masandawana’s efforts in front of goal were fruitless in the first half.

On the other hand, Sekhukhune hardly caused troubles for the Brazilians’ back four as Sundowns pinned them on their own half most of the time.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS AND SEKHUKHUNE UNITED WENT TO THE HALFTIME BREAK LEVEL

Sundowns and Sekhukhune went into the interval with a 0-0 scoreline as they couldn’t bury their scoring chances.

Miguel Cardoso’s troops came back with the same spirit in the second half, approaching Sekhukhune’s goal multiple times with the hope of breaking the deadlock.

Nothing could separate the two sides with the match ending 0-0, which led to extra time.

In the last minute of the extra time, Bafana Bafana international Jayden Adams scored the winner to guide his side to the semifinals.

As a result, Sundowns will lock horns with Chiefs in the semis at home, while the defending champions, Orlando Pirates, will welcome Marumo Gallants at Orlando Stadium.
