‘He mustn’t feel that comfortable’: Cardoso warns Jayden Adams

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has issued a warning to Bafana Bafana international Jayden Adams following their 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in a Nedbank Cup quartefinal encounter on Friday night.

The domestic cup tie between Bafana Ba Style and Babina Noko took place at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville. Adams came to Masandawana’s rescue as he scored a last-minute goal in the extra time to guide his side to the semifinals.

To top it off, this was Adams’ third consecutive goal as he also scored for Bafana when they played against Lesotho and Benin in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the just-ended international break.

The Nedbank Cup quarterfinal clash between Sundowns and Sekhukhune was initially set to be played on March 8th at the same venue. However, the match was postponed due to the stadium’s double booking.

This came after the stadium management had also agreed to host Bantwana’s FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier versus Nigeria on that same day.

WHAT DID MIGUEL CARDOSO WARN JAYDEN ADAMS ABOUT

Cardoso indicated that the former Stellenbosch FC player cannot afford complacency, as many players are challenging for starting roles.

“…Most of you heard me speaking about Jayden Adams when he arrived at Sundowns. I told him that I think he has to raise his intensity level to play for Sundowns,” said Cardoso.

“It’s clear that he has been doing pretty well. He has improved himself naturally. However, we have more players to substitute him. So, he mustn’t feel too comfortable because there are other players who are also pushing strongly.

“But he is giving a very good answer [in the field], and he is a player whom we trust and is a very good boy. He can raise the level even more because he is still young. He arrived at a club where the demands are higher and has adapted well despite arriving in January.”

Cardoso continued: “I’m pretty happy with what he has done with the national team. Let’s hope he can continue with that sequence, of course.”
