Ex-PSL star recounts 9-month jail ordeal after rape accusation

Former PSL star Masibusane Zongo has revealed details of a nine-month period he spent in jail following rape accusations. In a recent account, Zongo describes the ordeal.

Despite his talent, Zongo’s career was hampered by disciplinary issues, ultimately hindering his ability to reach his full potential.

The left-footed attacker, known as a bad boy’ won the hearts of many football lovers with his dribbling abilities when he broke into the scene in 2008 with SuperSport United.

After having a stint between 2008 and 2012 with Matsatsantsa, the 34-year-old went on to have a turbulent career with teams such Bidvest Wits, Blackburn Rovers, Chippa United, Platinum Stars, Royal Eagles, and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC [TTM].

Dubbed as one of the most creative players to ever come out of the PSL, Zongo found himself failing to live up the expectations following his widely reported issues with alcohol abuse.

Zongo was handed a lifeline in December 2023 after signing with the ABC Motsepe League side Munaca FC. He was released a few months later due to the bugging discipline problems.

“There’s a story I want to share, and I’ve never shared this story in any interview. So I was at Chippa United, and you know, at Chippa, I was a superstar,” Zongo said.

“We got paid on a Thursday, I went out with Mbulelelo Mabizela, whom I used to take like my father. At that time he was driving a Bentley, everything was great and going to training, the windows were always down.

“We then went to the University of Western Cape and met these other girls to drink alcohol. After that we went to the hotel. In the morning, Mabizela left with the girl he was with, and I also left [with a girl].

“One of the girls who was with us the previous night called me to ask what happened between me and the other girl the previous night, and I said nothing. I was told that the girl says I raped her and she already went to the police station.

“I was taken to the police station and Mabizela advised me to call the Chippa chairman, Chippa Mpengesi. He then told us [Chippa] that his lawyer would come to the police station, and I was out on bail.”

WHAT CHIPPA MPENGESI SAID ABOUT THE RAPE CASE

“So I also found out that the girl was a University student and she didn’t have money for accommodation. Mpengesi asked me how much does this girl want to drop charges, I refused because I’m not guilty.

“I moved to Platinum Stars and they took out a warrant of arrest for me because I didn’t know when was my date to attend court. I was arrested at Bushbuckridge, where I was playing a tournament in the township.

“I was taken from the pitch by the police. From there, I didn’t care anymore, they took me and I stayed there [in prison] for nine months.”
