Witbooi reveals crucial factors in Amajimbos’ comeback Egypt win
Amajimbos attacker Emile Witbooi has revealed three crucial factors that helped the SA Under-17 to stage a remarkable comeback win in their opening match of the 2025 AFCON tournament against Egypt.
Witbooi led the Vela Khumalo-coached side to a 4-3 victory over Egypt on Monday night at Stade Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco. At one point, Amajimbos found themselves trailing 3-1.
Simphiwe Mlondo opened the scoring for Amajimbos just one minute into the match. However, Egypt quickly equalised with a goal from Anas Roshdi in the fourth minute. Mohamed Abdel and Karim then extended Egypt’s lead with goals in the 13th and 18th minutes, making the score 3-1 in Egypt’s favour.
Despite the setback, Amajimbos remained determined. Kaizer Chiefs development star Neo Bohloko brought them back into contention by scoring two penalties in the 24th and 41st minutes. Ultimately, Witbooi, playing for Cape Town City FC, netted the decisive goal in the 71st minute, ensuring South Africa’s U-17 team walked away with maximum points.
Witbooi’s exceptional performance, which also included an assist and winning a penalty, earned him the Man of the Match award. The 16-year-old talent recently made history at Cape Town City by becoming the youngest player to represent the club at just 16 years, six months, and two days old during a 2-0 loss to AmaZulu FC in a Betway Premiership match on March 2, 2025.
Amajimbos are placed in Group B, alongside Burkina Faso, Cameroon, and Egypt in the 2025 AFCON.
SA U-17 VICTORY: WITBOOI POINTS TO 3 KEY FACTORS – CHARACTER, MENTALITY, COMPOSURE
The skilled attacking midfielder Witbooi attributed their stunning victory over Egypt to sheer character, a steely mentality, and remarkable composure, emphasising that the 3-1 deficit did not break their resolve.
“It was an intense match, but we showed real character to come back and win. I’m happy with our first game. The team stayed composed in tough moments, and that gave us confidence going forward,” said Witbooi.
“We kept our composure and took our chances. This win reflects our mentality – we never give up. I love having the ball, organising the play, and helping my teammates get into the right positions.”
As things stand, Khumalo’s boys are at the summit of Group B with three points after one game. They are equal on points with second-placed Burkina Faso.
SA U-17’s next fixture will be against Cameroon on Thursday, 3 April 2025. The match is scheduled to start at 16:00 [SA time] at Stade Larbi Zaouli.
