Barker reveals why Pitso Mosimane visited Stellenbosch
Steve Barker has shed light on Pitso Mosimane’s recent visit to Stellenbosch FC, revealing the reasons behind the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach’s presence at the club.
Mosimane has been unattached since parting ways with Iranian club Esteghlal FC due to a dispute over unpaid salaries. Before having a stint with Esteghlal FC, Mosimane had spells with teams such as Abha Club, Al-Wahda and Al-Ahli Saudi FC in the Gulf region.
Before venturing beyond the continent, Pitso Mosimane enjoyed highly successful tenures at Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly. The 60-year-old won two CAF Champions League titles with Al Ahly and one with Sundowns, among many other trophies.
The highly-decorated coach is currently in South Africa, spearheading his Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools programme to develop future stars.
A few days ago, Mosimane graced Stellenbosch with his presence, and Barker revealed that it was precisely to give the team a helping hand before their big game against Zamalek. According to the Stellies coach, Mosimane came to share his experience and tips on how to play against Egyptian giants Zamalek SC.
The Betway Premiership side is set to take on Zamalek in a two-legged CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal clash. The first leg, hosted at Cape Town Stadium, is set for Wednesday, April 2nd at 15:00, while the decisive return leg will be played in Egypt on Wednesday, April 9th.
The former Bafana Bafana mentor, Mosimane, gained experience facing Zamalek during his time at Sundowns and Al Ahly.
WHAT BARKER SAID ABOUT MOSIMANE’S VISIT AT STELLENBOSCH
“It was nice to have Pitso here. He was down with the North vs South Toyota [rugby] tournament. He has a big passion for football, so he was down here to see how Rugby is doing it,” Barker said.
“So it’s nice to see Pitso in that space, helping the broader South African football landscape. Since he was here, it wouldn’t have been wise of us not to use the opportunity to use his expertise and the knowledge that he has, having coached in Egypt and played a number of times against Zamalek.
“It was nice to hear from him, the mentality and the emotional engagement that Zamalek have, and just giving us a little bit of an input on how to approach these types of games.
“So to have that experience from somebody who has won the Champions League and played against Zamalek on a number of occasions was really great for us as coaches and the players.”
