Chipezeze: ‘That motivates me to do more…’

Magesi FC goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze has revealed why he no longer reads much into why he has been snubbed for Zimbabwe national team duty.

The 35-year-old shot-stopper has been overlooked by the Zimbabwe head coach, Michael Nees. Nees prefers Marumo Gallants’ Washington Arubi as his number one.

Ahead of the latest edition of the 2027 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Nees said he does not want too much competition in his goalkeeping department. Hence, Arubi has been deputised by Martin Mapisa of MWOS FC and rookie goalie Marley Tavaziva of Brentford B.

This is despite the fact that Chipezeze has been the most consistent Zimbabwean goalie most recently. He has kept 11 clean sheets in the ongoing 2024/25 Betway Premiership season and leads the charts so far.

Chipezeze has been a major driving force in Magesi FC’s hope for survival in their first season in the SA elite league. His fine performances in the Carling Knockout Cup, which Magesi eventually won, proved that he still has much to offer.

WHAT GOALKEEPER ELVIS CHIPEZEZE SAID

In an interview with FARPost, Chipezeze said being snubbed for Zimbabwe national team duty has instead worked as a motivation.

“We all want to play for our different countries. But when that’s not possible, we can only support those doing duty,” said Chipezeze. “Of course, I want to play for my country, but with the current situation, I am motivated to do more and keep more clean sheets.

“It’s very important at this stage that I work hard and maintain this form so that I can help my team. And not getting a national team call-up cannot leave me distracted, but I can only be confident and motivated to work hard.

“The level of competition that I have seen this season has been very high. I know it has contributed a lot to my performances and game.

“But it has not been a one-man effort. The whole team has made this possible. And I know we will keep rising because we are working for it.”
