Thabo Cele highlights greatest frustration with current Chiefs squad

In the wake of Kaizer Chiefs’ inconsistent performances, midfielder Thabo Cele has highlighted his greatest frustration with the current squad.

Cele joined Chiefs in January and instantly became influential in the dressing room and a fan favourite due to his displays in the middle of the park.

The KwaMashu native has played in 10 matches across all competitions for the club. Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has previously discussed Cele’s significance as he works to rebuild the club.

With Cele on the team, Amakhosi have won four games, lost five, and drawn one. They are currently in eighth place in the Betway Premiership, with 29 points.

WHAT IS THABO CELE’S FRUSTRATION WITH THE CURRENT CHIEFS SQUAD

“We always look to control the games, but sometimes we tend to lose control very easily,” said Cele at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena on Thursday. “And it’s something that’s frustrating.”

He, however, believes it’s something they are gradually improving. “But I think it’s something that we’ve been working on because, if you see now, we are able to start from here, get here and then to the final third.”

Cele urged his teammates to “maintain and improve the control aspect.” The 28-year-old emphasised that Nabi’s message has consistently been to control the game, allowing the team to create more opportunities, solidify their defence, and ultimately secure victories.

“So that’s the message even amongst ourselves. We talk amongst ourselves. So, just to maintain the positive atmosphere, because in these times, you need to be positive. You need to be positive so that you can have that drive to go again and again and again.”

Amakhosi are at ‘home’ against TS Galaxy on Saturday [19h00] at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. They will be hoping to get maximum points as they look to salvage the season.

Last season, Chiefs finished 10th and are eager to avoid a similar scenario in Nabi’s first season in charge. They also have the Nedbank Cup semifinal against Mamelodi Sundowns as they look to end the decade long drought.
