16 shots, 1 goal: Nabi ‘tired’ of Chiefs’ poor finishing
After Kaizer Chiefs’ 16-shot, 1-goal performance against TS Galaxy, coach Nasreddine Nabi revealed his growing frustration, stating he is “tired” of consistently addressing Amakhosi’s poor finishing.
Chiefs squandered numerous clear-cut chances to seal a victory at the New Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday night. Only five of their 16 shots were on target, all coming in the first half.
The 1-1 stalemate with TS Galaxy extended wasteful Chiefs’ winless streak in the Betway Premiership to four games with two consecutive losses and two draws.
Young striker Wandile Duba initially put Amakhosi ahead, seeming to set them on course for victory. However, a late equaliser from Mlungisi Mbunjana secured a point for Galaxy.
The pattern of creating opportunities but failing to convert has plagued the Soweto giants throughout the season. On the other hand, for coach Nabi, his first season at the helm has become a tightrope walk between building a competitive team and winning games.
This uncertainty not only complicates ‘The Glamour Boys’ efforts to improve upon last season’s tenth-place finish but also adds pressure on Nabi. However, a glimmer of hope remains, as they are only six points behind third-placed Galaxy, a position that would secure CAF Confederation Cup qualification.
NABI FRUSTRATED BY MISSED OPPORTUNITIES
Knowing that a top-eight finish is crucial and the Nedbank Cup is their sole shot at ending the trophy drought, Nabi expressed his disappointment that his troops failed to score more goals against Galaxy.
“The opportunities that we got were due to our pressing, our timing, because it is something that we worked on, the defending of the opponents,” a dejected Nabi said in his post-match interview on SuperSport TV.
“But I’m tired of repeating myself every day about the opportunities that we are missing, and we feel that we should have been able to score more than one goal, but we gave Galaxy the chance to stay alive.
“We knew that they were good with set pieces and we made changes [substitutions] to put some height, but unfortunately we conceded a goal from a corner.”
Nabi’s next challenge is a Nedbank Cup semifinal encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns, a team that has already inflicted three defeats upon Chiefs this season. The much-anticipated game will be staged at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, 13 April.
