Thabo Cele opens up on his Bafana Bafana hopes
Kaizer Chiefs central midfielder Thabo Cele has opened up on his hopes of getting another chance in the Bafana Bafana set-up.
Cele has been one of Amakhosi’s top performers since joining the club in January. He penned a three-and-a-half-year contract. That was after parting ways with Russian side Fakel Voronezh.
Cele has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he is a valuable asset to the club and that he could also be a vital cog for Bafana Bafana.
While the Nasreddine Nabi outfit has not fared well this season, Cele, who has five national team caps, has arguably been a cut above the rest.
Goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has also been a consistent performer at the Naturena club. Without doubt, Cele has raised his hand high for consideration at Bafana Bafana level. Bafana are riding high in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
They also qualified for the 2025 AFCON finals, which will be held in Morocco later this year. Though he was not part of the fairytale, the 28-year-old remains hopeful that his performances for Chiefs will eventually capture coach Hugo Broos’ attention.
WHAT THE KAIZER CHIEFS CENTRAL MIDFIELDER SAID
Asked about his hopes of returning to the Bafana Bafana fold, Cele said his performances for Chiefs are a statement of his quality.
“What I have been doing is helping the team win games. With the team performing, it will be a natural step for me to get to the national team. It’s something that is my dream. But right now I have to shine where I am and win games, to help the team,” Cele said.
In most recent times, no Kaizer Chiefs player has made the cut into Hugo Broos’ squad. Nevertheless, it will be no surprise if Cele is given another chance by Broos.
He has been Chiefs’ engine in the eight Betway Premiership matches he has played so far. It remains to be seen if Cele receives a call-up in the near future if his performances are anything to go by.
