DDC: Chiefs, Pirates drop points as Sundowns secure victory

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates dropped points while Mamelodi Sundowns secured a victory in the DDC over the weekend.

Amakhosi were held to a 1-1 draw by the champions and title contenders Stellenbosch FC at the Idas Valley Stadium in Stellenbosch.

Naledi Hlongwane’s first-half goal for the log leaders was cancelled out by a Quwan Plaatjies’ equaliser, resulting in a draw where Chiefs dropped points. Both sides finished the match with 10 men after Siyabonga Gumede [Chiefs] and Tonny Mbunga [Stellenbosch] were sent off.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys currently sit at the summit of the DDC standings with a total of 55 points accumulated from 23 matches played. Stellies follow closely in second place with 54 points from 24 matches.

CHIEFS COACH HAPPY WITH A POINT

Chiefs coach Dillon Sheppard considered a point a positive result, especially against the reigning champions Stellies in their home venue.

“A point is a great result knowing still their record at home and with them also putting a couple of first team players, they really went for the game,” said Sheppard, who was in charge as Vela Khumalo is on national duty with the SA Under-17.

The draw leaves Pirates in fifth place in the league standings with a total of 44 points from 25 encounters. Cape Town City are positioned seventh with 38 points earned from 24 matches.

On Sunday, the 10-man Brazilians overcame Polokwane City with a 1-0 victory at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
