Stellenbosch FC have pulled off a massive upset after defeating defending champions Zamalek SC 1-0 in the return leg of the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final game at the Cairo International Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Betway Premiership side found the back of the net through midfielder Sihle Nduli in the 79th minute to win the tie 1-0 on aggregate.

Stellenbosch travelled to Egypt, looking to make history and secure a spot in the semi-final of the Confederation Cup in their maiden season.

The Winelands-based side came into the second-leg clash with Zamalek with a fair chance of advancing to the next round after the two clubs played to a goalless draw in the first-leg at Cape Town Stadium last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian giants were aiming to uphold their authority and push for the Confederation Cup title for the second season in a row after winning the trophy in the previous campaign.

In the final last season, Zamalek defeated Moroccan side RS Berkane on the away goal rule after playing to a 2-2 draw in the two-legged final.

The White Castle had a promising start to the match against Stellenbosch, creating a handful of goal-scoring opportunities; however, they were wasteful in the final third.

STELLENBOSCH AND ZAMALEK WENT INTO HALF-TIME BREAK LEVEL ON 0-0

Despite making a push for a goal in the first-half, Stellies stood firm at the back to take the match to the half-time break level on 0-0.

In the second stanza, Zamalek continued to control the match with their ball retention, but they failed to trouble Stellenbosch in defence.

On the other hand, the Steve Barker-coached team brought on Lesiba Nku and Chumani Butsaka in the second-half to put pressure on Zamalek. The South African side eventually found the all-important goal in the 79th minute courtesy of Sihle Nduli.

Stellenbosch held on to pull off a massive upset against Zamalek to stage a semi-final clash against Simba SC, which is coached by Fadlu Davids.
