Cardoso identifies Sundowns DDC star with PSL potential

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has identified one DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] star who has shown great potential to play in the PSL.

Over the past few months, Sundowns have successfully given opportunities to young talent from the club’s development structures.

The Brazilians have roped in a handful of DDC players in the senior team to join their star-studded squad. Currently, Sundowns have Kutlwano Letlhaku, Siyabonga Mabena, and Malibongwe Khoza as the recent additions from the DDC to the first team.

Khoza and Letlhaku are part of the Downs team that is competing for major trophies such as the Betway Premiership, Nedbank Cup, and CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, Mabena has been out with a long-term injury layoff, which saw him miss the most part of the 2024/25 season.

Nkosi, who has been captaining the Sundowns DDC team, was promoted to the first team at the start of the 2022/23 campaign. However, he has been featuring in the DDC regularly.

The central midfielder, who was also named Player of the Season in the reserve league last season, made seven appearances in all competitions for the Chloorkop-based outfit under the guidance of the then-head coach, Rulani Mokwena.

“I’ll speak about Ntando because he deserves it, he’s an honest, humble, and quality player,” Cardoso said during the Nedbank Cup press conference in Sandton on Thursday.

“If I can show you the message regarding his performance in a friendly match that was played at Chloorkop when we were away to play Esperance, you will have an answer to that question [about Nkosi’s progress].

“My assistant coach [Pedro Azevedo], who was with the remaining squad, told me that we have to give this boy a chance, but it’s important to understand that this boy has two international players in his position, Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas.

“So it’s not easy for him. I wish we could finish the league in a way that he can get a chance to prove himself in front of everyone because he has the level to play in the PSL.”
