‘He’s not controlled by social media’: Bafana star praises Broos

FCSB star Siyabonga Ngezana has praised Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos for always standing firm on his decisions and not being controlled by social media opinions.

The 27-year-old has been a regular in the Bafana squad in recent months after consistently producing consistent performances at club level.

Ngezana was called up to the two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin a few weeks ago. The lanky centre-back was in the starting line-up in both matches when South Africa defeated Lesotho 2-0 at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium before beating Benin away from home with the same scoreline.

The Sebokeng-born defender formed a solid centre-back pairing with Orlando Pirates star Nkosinathi Sibisi and kept two clean sheets in Bafana’s two qualifying matches.

Before making a big move overseas in July 2023, Ngezana was in the colours of Kaizer Chiefs, where he spent six seasons. The Amakhosi development product was often criticised by the supporters, who were questioning his qualities.

Ngezana, who received his first Bafana call-up under Broos in March last year, has revealed that he loves the national team coach for always standing firm on his beliefs and not listening to social media.

“I think coach Hugo Broos has patience for players and always tries to get the best out of players. So I love his mindset because he’s a patient person,” Ngezana told FARPost.

“The coach is not controlled by social media, he always sticks to his tactics, and it’s an honour for me to be part of the squad because if you check lately, it’s hard to be in the squad.

“There are so many quality players who are doing well for their clubs, and the coach doesn’t call up players just because you play in Europe. If you look at our squad, it’s not like before, where you would have players who are on the team because they are playing overseas.

“With him, that mentality doesn’t work; he’s always fair enough to give you the opportunity to represent the country if you’re working hard.”
