Rebecca Joy Adams, SA’s first female footballer to play in Brazil, has embarked on a new career in rugby and shared the reasons for her new journey.

Adams has recently come back to the country following her stint with the Namibian club, Windhoek City FC, where she played for one season.

While at the Namibian side, ‘Becca’, as she’s affectionately known within the football circles, assisted the club in securing eighth place on the table with 24 points from 22 league matches last season.

Meanwhile, during her football career, the talented attacker from Cape Town represented Vasco da Gama prior to relocating abroad, where she participated in college football in the United States of America [USA] for Northeast Texas community, attracting the interest of Brazilian team Sao Bernado and had the hopes of being called-up for Banyana Banyana.

REBECCA JOY ADAMS OPENS UP ON HER NEW CHAPTER IN RUGBY

Adams stated that she decided to shift her career from football to rugby since she had been without a club after parting ways with Windhoek City FC, aiming to leverage rugby for greater opportunities.

The 25-year-old is currently playing in the First Division in the Western Province League [amateur league] for Elsie’s River Women’s rugby team. She plays as a winger for the team.

However, Adams mentioned that she hasn’t formally retired from football but chose to explore a different career direction.

“No, I wouldn’t say I retired from football, but I have decided to play rugby while I’m still in Cape Town, as I was without a club. I want to use it [rugby] to my advantage and prepare myself for more opportunities and to better myself and take advantage of the opportunities coming my way,” Adams told FARPost.

“I wouldn’t say I forgot about football, but as life gives you an opportunity, one has to embrace change and adapt to it. As one door closes, another opens.

“Life is constantly changing, and as it changes, we have to adapt to new environments. So, rugby is just one of the new changes I have adapted to.

“I’m striving to give my best and provide a service of excellence in everything I do. The goal is still to be better than I was yesterday and to constantly apply myself daily. The game has changed, but it’s the same passion I have.”
