Cheeseboy Mokoena backs Pirates star for Footballer of the Season award

Former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Lebohang ‘Cheeseboy’ Mokoena has thrown his weight behind an Orlando Pirates star for the prestigious Footballer of the Season award.
The Buccaneers have had a good run of form in the 2024/25 season as they’re pushing to lift major trophies such as the Betway Premiership, Nedbank Cup, and CAF Champions League.
In the past weekend, Pirates booked a place in the Nedbank Cup final after defeating Marumo Gallants 1-0 in the semi-final at Orlando Stadium. The Soweto giants are set to lock horns with crosstown rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on the 10th of May.
Meanwhile, Pirates are also in the last four of the Champions League, where they’ll face Pyramids FC in the two-legged semi-final.
In the fierce race for a league title, Pirates are chasing Mamelodi Sundowns for the big prize. The Ghosts are sitting second on the league table with 46 points in 20 matches, while Sundowns are occupying the top spot with 58 points in 23 games. They have already won a trophy this season – the MTN8 for the third time in a row.
THE PIRATES STAR TIPPED FOR THE FOOTBALLER OF THE SEASON AWARD?

As the season nears the end, the ex-Pirates and Sundowns winger Mokoena has picked Deon Hotto as the hot favourite for the PSL Footballer of the Season award.
The Namibian attacker has been one of the consistent performers for Pirates after playing a whopping 40 matches across all competitions this season, scoring six goals and providing six assists.
“I’m amazed by Hotto, I mean, at his age [34] he still has the pace to run the whole 90 minutes. On the counter-attack, you still find him having that urgency,” Mokoena said on Soccer Beat podcast.
“And I think hard work is the spirit that Hotto lives by every season, and I won’t be surprised if he’s nominated as one of the best players.
“I’m raising my hand and saying we need to have Hotto on that [Footballer of the Season] list. He gives top performances week in, week out. He doesn’t miss any match and he’s never been injured, salute to Hotto.”
