Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has shared his initial reaction to his transfer to the reigning South African champions, stating that he was “upset”.

The Bafana Bafana midfielder was Sundowns’ first signing during the January transfer window as the club sought to bolster their midfield.

The 23-year-old penned a three-and-a-half-year deal after long-drawn negotiations between the Tshwane giants and his boyhood club, Stellenbosch FC.

Adams spent five years at Stellies, growing into one of the key players. He has since revealed how he received the news about the move to Masandawana, where he has hit the ground running.

In Sundowns’ colours, Adams has featured in 17 games across all competitions with three goals and two assists to his name.

“Sundowns have been looking for me for a while,” said Adams as he reflected on the switch. “My agent called me, I was at home and told me I must pack my bags the next day. I was upset because it was short notice for me.”

Adams revealed that he immediately told his partner about the transfer. “I spoke to my girlfriend and my child first because they live with me and they’re close to me. Unfortunately, I had to do my job.”

He believes moving to Gauteng with his family has helped him settle into the new environment. “They’re with me. That helps a lot because if you have your loved ones around you, you just feel at home. When you go into the field, you just do your best…”

During his five-year stint with the Cape Winelands club, he helped them win the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup and seal a historic qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals this campaign. He made 139 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing 10 assists at Stellies.

His performances earned him a place in the Bafana Bafana squad under the guidance of Hugo Broos. Adams was part of the national team squad that won bronze at the 2023 AFCON finals in Ivory Coast.
