Former Kaizer Chiefs star Mandla Masango has weighed in on the qualities of the club’s current top scorer, attacker Wandile Duba.
The 20-year-old has been integral to Chiefs’ rebuilding phase under head coach Nasreddine Nabi. At the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, Chiefs roped in Nabi alongside his technical team to turn the club’s fortunes.
The Tunisian tactician has had a rocky start to life at the Naturena-based side as they are sitting eighth on the league table with 30 points after 24 games. However, Nabi has a chance to end the nine-year trophy drought at Chiefs after booking a spot in the Nedbank Cup final, where they’ll face Orlando Pirates.
Meanwhile, Duba was crucial for the Soweto giants as they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup semi-final at Loftus Versfeld Stadium last weekend.
The striker who came through Chiefs’ development ranks was on the scoresheet alongside Ashley Du Preez, while Teboho Mokoena netted for Masandawana.
Duba produced a Man-of-the-Match performance against Downs, and in his post-match interview, he promised the Amakhosi fans that they’d win the Nedbank Cup.
In the current campaign, Duba, who recently returned to action after recovering from an injury, has scored six goals and provided three assists in 21 games across all competitions for Chiefs.
MASANGO REVEALS THAT DUBA IS MORE SUITED AS A STRIKER AND NOT A WINGER

Former Chiefs winger Masango has opened up on Duba’s potential. However, he suggests that the youngster would do even better as a natural striker and not where he has been playing as a wide player.
“I think Duba is a player who has a lot of potential, and as a country we have a problem of scoring goals,” Masango said at the SuperSportBet Sta’ Playa launch most recently.
“As young as he is, he’s got a big heart, and if you remember, he scored a goal where he put his foot on the line and nearly got injured. I’m proud to see such performances from a Kaizer Chiefs product; it shows that he’s ready to lead the lines. At first, he played wide, and he played well, but that’s not his strength.
“I used to watch him in the development, and he used to play as a number 9. He makes good runs, and he’s arrogant because you need that arrogance so that you are not overshadowed by big defenders. He’s very mobile and has a good eye for goal.”
