Mamelodi Sundowns defender Asekho Tiwani has opened up on the trust shown in him by the club’s head coach, Miguel Cardoso.

During Sundowns’ recent match against Kaizer Chiefs, the Spanish tactician demonstrated his faith in the 19-year-old defender, introducing him for the injured Divine Lunga, notably choosing the youngster over the experienced Aubrey Modiba.

Tiwani has made 14 appearances across all competitions since joining Masandawana from Sekhukhune United at the start of the season.

The young defender has been vying for the left-back spot in the team against the more experienced players – both Modiba and Lunga.

Tiwani feels that Cardoso has seen significant potential in him, resulting in the immense trust that he has displayed since his arrival.

“It means a lot that the coach has faith in me as a young player, that means he can see what I’m doing,” said Tiwani. “So, the only thing I must do is to try and work hard whenever I’m given a chance. That will help me.”

Tiwani praised the Portuguese coach for his good relationships with everyone in the team and for treating all players equally, without any sign of favouritism.

“We’ve got a good relationship, and he’s open to everyone. He doesn’t have favouritism,” added Tiwani.

“He always tells us that everyone must be ready because this week you might be on the stands or bench, and next week, you’re starting the game.

“So, this is something that he emphasises that whenever the opportunity comes, you must be ready for it even though you’re not playing.”

Tiwani came through the youth ranks of Babina Noko and was one of the breakout players in the Betway Premiership in the previous campaign.

The SA junior international made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals in Sekhukhune colours prior to moving to Sundowns.
