Talented former KZN Academy full-back, Mhleli Mabuza, has made a remarkable impact overseas, being named the best right back in the Campeonato de Portugal, and PSL clubs are circling him.
Mabuza has been exceptional for Louletano Desportos Clube in the southern European country’s fourth tier.
His consistent performances for Louletano DC, which saw him provide nine assists this season, have culminated in this recognition. The recognition comes at an interesting time with links to a return to the South African topflight.
Some Betway Premiership clubs – one in Gauteng and two in KZN – are reportedly monitoring the enterprising fullback ahead of the July transfer window. The 24-year-old moved to Portugal in 2018 after impressing during some friendly matches.
“I was playing for Manzini United in my township in the SAB League. So I saw that there would be trials at the KZN Academy. So I took a chance and went there for a trial. Luckily, I got selected to be part of an academy squad to participate in a European tour,” Mabuza told FARPost.
“We came to Portugal in July 2018, and then played friendly games with other clubs. Some clubs were interested in me. So that’s how I ended up in Portugal.”

He admitted that his European journey hasn’t been easy, “with a different style of play, the language and culture.” “But I was able to adapt very quickly, learn the language and the style of play.”
MABUZA NAMED BEST RIGHT BACK
He highlighted two memorable moments from his time in Portugal. One of these was achieving promotion to the third tier with USC Paredes during the 2021/22 season. “My best moment was in 2022 when we became champions. We won the league with USC, which led to our promotion. That was my best moment.”
“This year has been incredibly productive for me individually. I was selected as the best right back in the league, which was a rewarding outcome based on my performance in the league earlier this season. I believe I made around 8 to 9 assists.”
Asked whether he would consider a return home next season, he would not rule out the possibility.
