Chiefs goalie Bvuma addresses Khune’s public rebuke

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has addressed the recent public criticism from club legend Itumeleng Khune, providing his perspective on the matter.

Bafana Bafana icon Khune expressed his disappointment that his former Amakhosi teammate Bvuma did not heed his advice, unlike Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams.

Khune, who competed with Williams for the Bafana’s number one spot, stated he advised Williams to prioritise earning his place at the national team regardless of their relationship, a strategy he believes contributed to the Mamelodi Sundowns‘ shot-stopper’s success.

However, Khune feels Bvuma, his former understudy who took over the Chiefs’ number one spot after Khune’s contract expired last season, missed an opportunity to learn from him, evidenced by Bvuma’s struggle for consistent clean sheets.

Bvuma acknowledged Khune’s significant contributions to Chiefs and SA football and voiced his respect for the veteran goalkeeper’s legacy. He emphasised that his current focus remains on helping the Soweto giants regain their former stature as ‘Cup Kings’ of SA football.

“Listen, Itu is a club legend. What he has done for the team, I don’t think anyone in our generation will ever do it,” said Bvuma at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena on Thursday.

“What he has done for the country is very big. I respect him and listen, I do talk to him, I do talk to Itu, and whatever that happened, like it happened and whatever that he said he said, but my focus is the team my focus is me doing well for the team and also making sure that I leave to my full potential.”

Meanwhile, Bvuma will be eager to keep a clean sheet as Amakhosi host Marumo Gallants in a Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The 29-year-old has only recorded eight clean sheets in 21 appearances across all competitions this season, conceding that his performance could have been better.

“It could have been better,” admitted Bvuma, who is the preferred first-choice goalkeeper under coach Nasreddine Nabi, ahead of Fiacre Ntwari, Brandon Petersen, and Karabo Molefe.

“Definitely, there are things I could have done better, but all I can do is focus on the next one [game].
