AmaZulu FC midfielder Bongani Zungu has shed light on how the potential move to Wydad Casablanca failed at the beginning of the season.
‘Ben 10’ is seemingly enjoying his stint with Usuthu, having arrived at the club in the middle of the season. This move came after he was unattached for a few months following his exit from Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the previous season.
Prior to his switch to Durban, he came close to signing for the Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, who are under the tutelage of SA coach Rulani Mokwena, who’s reportedly on the verge of parting ways with the club.
Zungu trained with ‘The Red Castle’ for a few days before surprisingly returning to SA.
The 32-year-old midfielder, Zungu, has revealed that he had a verbal agreement in place with Wydad Casablanca before travelling to Morocco to train with the team.
He explained that he decided to leave because he was made to wait for some time and couldn’t stay for long, especially since he also had other interested clubs waiting while training with Wydad.

ZUNGU ON WYDAD’S COLLAPSED MOVE – ‘I PERSONALLY DECIDED TO COME BACK’
“There was a verbal agreement before I went there, that’s why [I went]. I wouldn’t go for nothing, there was a verbal agreement of a contract,” said Zungu during the interview with FARPost.
“So, I went there and trained, but I believe the club was going through a transition. I believe so, even though I was not told. I’ve been in the game for a long time, and I could see [the team was in transition]. There were a lot of ins and outs, players coming in and out.
“I could sense that…and I was making the teams [that wanted me] wait, like AmaZulu and some other teams, because I had clubs in South Africa I was speaking to.
“So, I didn’t want to stay there long. But Rulani and I never spoke. I just made a decision and was like; ‘Coach I’m sorry, I’m not a kid anymore, I cannot be waiting and waiting and waiting’.
“Obviously, I thought he couldn’t do anything about it. So, I personally decided to come back.”
Zungu has made 14 appearances across all competitions in the green colours of AmaZulu and netted one goal since his arrival.
