Zwane pinpoints his biggest mistake during Sundowns stint

Siyanda Zwane in action for Mamelodi Sundowns

Looking back at his time with Mamelodi Sundowns, former defender Siyanda Zwane has identified the single wrong move he believes he made while at the Chloorkop outfit.

Zwane joined Masandawana in July 2014 from Golden Arrows. The 39-year-old retired footballer spent two and a half seasons at the Brazilians.

He managed to play over 50 games for Sundowns and won two league titles and the CAF Champions League title.

The retired footballer’s marriage with Sundowns officially came to an end in June 2019, and he went to join Bidvest Wits on a free transfer.

THE WRONG MOVE SIYANDA ZWANE BELIEVES HE MADE WHILE AT SUNDOWNS

Zwane has revealed that he feels like he made the wrong decision to leave Sundowns to join Ajax Cape Town on loan.

He insists that he should have stayed at Bafana Ba Style and fought for his place in the team. However, he consoles himself by stating that whatever happened in his football career was “written in the stars.”

“It was written in the stars that Siyanda Zwane would go through this and that until he reached this phase in life [retiring from football]. However, I would have wished to stay longer at Mamelodi Sundowns,” Zwane told Metro FM.

“I stayed there for two and a half years. The other part of the season, I went on loan to Ajax Cape Town. Mushin [Ertugrul] called me and said, ‘I can see you’re not playing. I’m going to Ajax; would you mind joining me there’?

“The regret came when I thought that, based on the way I had performed at Ajax, Sundowns would call me back. So, when they didn’t call me back, that’s when the regret kicked in that maybe it was a wrong move to leave Sundowns to join Ajax on loan.

“Normally, when a player goes on loan, their contract is frozen. However, when I went to Ajax, I thought I would return to Sundowns and finish my contract. But they said they didn’t freeze my contract; therefore, my contract with them is over. I had to find a team after that.”
