Having now gone four matches without a victory, Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has identified a specific issue he believes is responsible for his team’s recent slump in the Betway Premiership.
Abafana Bes’thende suffered their second successive league defeat on Saturday, losing 3-0 at home to Stellenbosch FC.
The KZN side now find itself in 13th place in the Betway Premiership standings, having secured 26 points from 23 league matches.
Speaking to the journalists after the their match against Stellenbosch at Mpumalanga Stadium on Saturday, Mngqithi asserted his team controlled the majority of possession in all past four encounters where they failed to win, indicating that they were not outplayed.
However, he feels Arrows’ downfall has been a lack of clinical finishing coupled with the concession of “scrappy goals.”
MNGQITHI SAYS ARROWS HAVEN’T BEEN SHARP UPFRONT
“I feel bad because in the last four games, I don’t remember any game where we were dominated by the opponents,” said Mngqithi.
“I think in all the games, we’ve had the better share of possession; we created some good chances.
“But unfortunately, if you don’t take your chances, you are bound to concede silly goals like we did. We conceded a goal that was very scrappy against Marumo Gallants; we conceded the same goal against AmaZulu FC in the last match.
“And we conceded the ones that we conceded now [against Stellenbosch]. We missed sitters against Chippa United before that.
“It’s true, it’s the reality that we have to work a little bit harder to try to convert the chances that we create, because I think that’s the biggest Achilles heel. But we also concede goals when you least expect.
“That’s the most unfortunate part, but I’m still confident, we’ll do better.”
Arrows will be aiming to bounce back when they face off against Orlando Pirates in the league clash on Tuesday, 6 May at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The match will kick off at 19:30.
