What Sirino told his wife ahead of Chiefs’ Nedbank Cup final clash

Gastón Sirino of Kaizer Chiefs addressing the media

Kaizer Chiefs playmaker Gaston Sirino has shared what he said to his wife ahead of Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final.

The Montevideo-born star is in his first season with Amakhosi as they aim to end a decade-long trophy drought.

Sirino joined the club as a free agent from Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the season. He knows that the last time Chiefs won a domestic trophy was when they lifted the Premiership title in the 2014/15 season.

Chiefs will face Orlando Pirates in the final of the Nedbank Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium this Saturday. They are coming off a 2-1 defeat to Pirates in the Betway Premiership Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium.

Speaking to the media at Naturena on Monday at the Kaizer Chiefs Village, the Uruguayan emphasised that winning this edition of the cup would be more significant.

Although the 34-year-old lifted the 2021/22 Nedbank Cup with Masandawana, he believes a victory over the weekend would carry even greater weight.

WHAT GASTON SIRINO SAID TO HIS WIFE

“Like I said to my wife…It will be a different feeling to make history here at Chiefs; it’s a different cup, and it’s a different opportunity for me. I have already won the Nedbank Cup, but this one is special to me. I want to fight to make history. We need to prepare next season to play better,” said Sirino.

The veteran attacker, who won seven league titles with Sundowns, acknowledged that the season was “not so good”. He, however, is convinced a win on Saturday could make amends for an inconsistent season.

“Sometimes we play well, very well. But we lose or draw the game. But I think it’s our mistakes. We need to take responsibility. But we need to win the final. So it’s a good opportunity to change everything.”

Sirino also said Saturday’s showdown against Pirates was an opportunity for Amakhosi to “make history”.

“So now we need to fight more to win this trophy,” he added.

While they met the Buccaneers in the league on Saturday, Sirino said, “the final is different”.
