Ex-Chiefs striker Gonzalez thriving at new overseas club

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Jasond Gonzalez is in the form of his life at his new Bolivian club, scoring four goals in six outings.

Gonzalez spent six months at Real Santa Cruz after leaving Amakhosi at the end of last season in the PSL.

Santa Cruz, the club he played for before his move to South Africa, where he scored 14 goals in 39 games, was relegated.

After their demotion, the 25-year-old penned a year-long deal with Bolivian outfit Club Deportivo Always Ready. The deal keeps him at the club until the end of December.

Boliviaโ€™s 16-team league runs between January and December. Following his move, Gonzalez made his debut on 26 March 2025, but could not hit the target for four games.

Gonzalez got his breakthrough two weeks ago against Universitario de Vinto by scoring a hat-trick. This was in a 7-0 drubbing as they maintained their 100 per cent record this season.

He added to his tally this week as Always Ready beat Club Wilge Jorge Wilstermann 7-1. The Colombian forwardโ€™s club currently tops the log standings after a six-match unbeaten streak. They finished fifth last season, with Gaston Sirinoโ€™s former club, Bolivar, winning the league.

HOW DID JASOND GONZALEZ FARE AFTER LEAVING CHIEFS

After a difficult season in the Betway Premiership, Gonzalez netted six goals in 19 appearances for Santa Cruz. However, his goals were not enough to save them their Division Profesional Clausura status.

Despite getting the chop, the striker’s tenure in Bolivia was markedly more successful than his time in South Africa, where he did not find the back of the net in 13 appearances for Chiefs across all competitions.

While Gonzalez struggled in South Africa, Chiefsโ€™ interim coach last season, Cavin Johnson, offered a unique perspective on the striker. โ€œI think heโ€™s a good player, he does well in training,โ€ Johnson told journalists towards the end of last season.

Gonzรกlez, who started his career with Atlรฉtico Nacional in his homeland, will be hoping to maintain his form and help his team lift their fourth league title. They last won the league in the 2020 season.
