Maswanganyi and Mabasa secure Pirates victory over Arrows

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa in action against Golden Arrows

Patrick Maswanganyi and Tshegofatso Mabasa found the back of the net to secure a 2-1 victory for Orlando Pirates over Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday night.

The two attackers scored one goal on each half while Siyanda Mthanti was on the scoresheet for Arrows. Pirates are continuing their tight schedule in the domestic competitions, which has seen them play a match every three days.

Before travelling to KZN to face Arrows, the Buccaneers were in a tightly-contested league clash against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

In an entertaining Soweto Derby clash, Pirates came from a goal down to claim an impressive 2-1 victory over Amakhosi. The Ghosts completed a league double over Chiefs after winning the reserve fixture 1-0.

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro made seven changes to the starting line-up that collected maximum points against Chiefs.

The Spanish tactician rested a handful of his key players ahead of the Nedbank Cup final against Chiefs on Saturday, 10 May at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

In a crucial league match, Pirates had a slow start to the game after Arrows created most of the scoring chances. Abafana Bes’thende were causing all sorts of problems for Pirates. However, the Manqoba Mngqithi-coached team could not convert their chances into goals. The match went into the half-time break with the score at 0-0.

PATRICK MASWANGANYI GAVE PIRATES THE LEAD

The Houghton-based side came back from the half-time break high on confidence, searching for an opening goal of the match.

Pirates eventually scored through Patrick Maswanganyi in the 50th minute. On the other hand, Arrows found a quick response after equalising in the 59th minute through exciting attacker Siyanda Mthanti.

With the match heading to an end, Bucs scored the winning goal courtesy of Tshegofatso Mabasa in the 72nd minute.

Mabasa’s goal in the second-half was enough to earn Pirates three points away from home and gave them a moral boost heading to the Nedbank Cup final against rivals Chiefs.
