Chiefs legend questions Yusuf Maart’s leadership qualities

Kaizer Chiefs legend Marks Maponyane has delivered a scathing assessment of Yusuf Maart’s captaincy, stating bluntly, “He has no leadership skills,” amidst Amakhosi’s below-par performances this season.

Maart was named Chiefs’ skipper at the beginning of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign. This is not something new to the former Bafana Bafana international, as he previously served as the captain of Sekhukhune United during the 2021/22 PSL season.

So far, Maart has played in 31 games across all competitions for the Glamour Boys, scoring two goals and weighing in with three assists.

Chiefs are currently ninth on the Betway Premiership table with 30 points after 26 matches. The Nasreddine Nabi-coached side has won eight games, drawn six, and succumbed to 12 defeats.

MARKS MAPONYANE ON YUSUF MAART’S LEADERSHIP

On Monday, during a radio interview discussing Chiefs’ 2-1 loss to Pirates last Saturday, Maponyane also addressed Maart’s leadership skills.

Maponyane disclosed his dissatisfaction with Maart’s role as captain at the club, stating that he lacks leadership abilities.

“…You cannot leave this discussion without criticising the captain of Kaizer Chiefs. How can you have a captain who has no leadership skills? Like I saw last time, he tried a crossfield pass and it ended up in row 45,” said Maponyane on Radio 2000.

“I mean, you can’t do that. You have to measure it or aim it at your teammates or the other side of the field. So, those are the things that make you think that a simple pass to your wide teammate cannot end up in the stands. That doesn’t make sense to me.

“There are no leaders in this team, and the reason is simple: you cannot lead when you are not confident, and you cannot be confident when you are not winning.”

Chiefs have two matches remaining this season in the league. They will face Sekhukhune United on the road and host Polokwane City FC at home this month.

Furthermore, they will face their rivals again in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday as they aim to end their nine-year trophy drought.
