Orlando Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has revealed his key observations about Jose Riveiro during the Spanish mentor’s three-year tenure at the Soweto giants.
Riveiro, who arrived at Pirates in July 2022, will leave the club when his contract ends in June 2025. He has chosen not to sign a new deal with the Buccaneers.
During his time at Bucs, Riveiro has secured five trophies. This includes two Nedbank Cup victories and three MTN8 titles. In addition, he recently guided the team to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, where they narrowly lost 3-2 on aggregate to Egyptian side Pyramids FC.
The outgoing coach, Riveiro, still has an opportunity to increase his collection of trophies, as Pirates will take on rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the sold-out Nedbank Cup final on Saturday, May 10, at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

MANDLA NCIKAZI’S TAKE ON JOSE RIVEIRO AS A COACH
Drawing from his close working relationship with Riveiro over the past three years, Ncikazi has highlighted the head coach’s distinct approach and professionalism as key to his tenure.
A notable observation is Riveiro’s even-keeled temperament, remaining consistent in his demeanour regardless of victory or defeat, a trait Ncikazi believes fosters a fearless environment, particularly beneficial for younger players.
“Coach Riveiro is a very unique individual; more than just a coach, he goes further than that. He is highly professional,” said Ncikazi during the Nedbank Cup press conference in Durban on Wednesday.
“He takes his job very seriously. He is neither too happy nor too disappointed because where there are too many expectations, there is always room for disappointment.
“So, it is easier for the players; whether we win or lose, his approach is the same. I always think that it helps the young players perform without fear. Whether the results are good or bad, he is still the same.”
Ncikazi continued: “He is professional, prepares well, and analyses games. He doesn’t rely on analysts, which is a new trend in our teams. He does things for himself so he can create his game plan.”
