Itu Khune’s tips for fans who didn’t secure Nedbank Cup final tickets

Legendary former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune

Legendary former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has shared valuable tips for fans who could not secure tickets to the Nedbank Cup final.

Tickets for the highly-anticipated Soweto Derby, featuring Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, sold out in just 90 minutes.

The two Soweto giants will clash at the iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium, whose approved capacity is 49 307, on Saturday at 3PM.

The overwhelming demand for tickets resulted in over 10,500 fans receiving refunds after the match sold out in record time. As a result, many fans were left frustrated.

Khune, who won the 2013 Nedbank Cup with Amakhosi, arrived in Durban on Wednesday as an ambassador for Nedbank. He noted that many people have been inquiring about tickets for the event.

In response to fans, he confirmed that there will be public screenings in multiple locations throughout Durban, including Kwa Max Lifestyle Alfred Park and South Beach.

“We went to the beach after we arrived in Durban yesterday [Wednesday] since I’m gonna be working…,” Khune said during a Nedbank Cup final preview on X.

“As I was walking around the beach, people kept on asking for pictures, which I don’t mind taking. But I kept on asking them about tickets. They were saying ‘we don’t have tickets’, and I was like, since you guys have extended your stay, rather go to the nearest pub or where there’s a television [public screening] where you guys can enjoy yourselves.

“A lot of the people are saying the exact words that I was sharing with them to say, ‘since we’ve extended, we don’t have tickets, we’d rather watch it at a watch party’.”

“I’m happy that I was able to spread the message so that people don’t leave thinking we can’t watch the game or enjoy it because we don’t have tickets to go to the stadium. They can go to the watch parties…”

Meanwhile, Major General Phumelele Makoba, the deputy provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, cautioned individuals without tickets to stay away from the venue.

“If you know that you don’t have tickets to watch the game, stay away or go somewhere else where you can watch the match instead of coming to the stadium to cause unnecessary conflict.”
