SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has addressed latest claims of the club’s sale to a consortium aiming to revive Bloemfontein Celtic.
A foreign coach who recently held discussions with SuperSport United regarding the head coaching position has disclosed that he was told the club may not be in existence next season.
The Tshwane side sacked Gavin Hunt in March after securing just five wins in 21 league games this season.
Indications suggest that Matsatsantsatsa have received interest from several coaches keen on their head coach job. However, one candidate who claims to have had informal discussions told FARPost that he was notified that the club would soon be sold.
This comes as another source revealed that a consortium aiming to revive Bloemfontein Celtic is in advanced negotiations to purchase the club. The source indicated that the team would relocate to Bloemfontein next season if the sale goes through. โThe idea is to buy the club and rename it Bloemfontein Celtic,โ the source said.
WHAT STAN MATTHEWS SAID ABOUT RUMOURS THAT THE CLUB IS SOLD
In a response to FARPost, Matthews said the team was โfocused on our challenges in the leagueโ. SuperSport have struggled for form this season and are currently in 13th place after amassing 26 points off 24 games.

Matthews added that the issue of SuperSport being sold โhad been coming up since 2019 without any substance to date.โ
He further said โthis kind of speculation is not where any of our thoughts are occupied right now.โ
The sale of Matsatsantsaโs top-flight status to Siwelele would mark a significant event in South African football, signalling the end of an era for a beloved Tshwane club.
With countless top-eight finishes, the club has produced some of the countryโs top players including Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams.
If the two parties reach an agreement, Celtic will need approval from the PSL to transfer SuperSport’s PSL status.
