With Kaizer Chiefs set to face Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final, Teko Modise has revisited the statement he made earlier this year about Amakhosi potentially lifting silverware this season.
The two Soweto rivals will battle for a trophy on Saturday, 10 May at the sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban at 3:30PM.
It has been nearly ten years since the Phefeni Glamour Boys last lifted a trophy. Their last silverware came in the 2014/15 season when they won both the MTN8 and the ABSA Premiership under the guidance of Stuart Baxter.
Modise believes the lengthy trophy drought at Naturena has gone on long enough. He stated that for a big club with such a massive fanbase as Chiefs, there comes a point where they simply must lift silverware.
Earlier this year, Modise said, “Yes please, we need them [Chiefs] to win a trophy this season.”
MODISE SAYS NEDBANK CUP GLORY WOULD CHANGE A LOT AT CHIEFS
“First of all, the reason I said what I said at the beginning of the [year], that it is an opportunity for Chiefs to win the trophy is because, at some point, something has to give,” Modise told FARPost.
“And being a club that has so much history with so many fans within the country itself crying out about the same thing, ‘trophy, trophy’. You look at all your arch-rivals, they are winning trophies, at some point, something is gonna give.
“You look at Kaizer Chiefs, things are not good and this might be the trophy that turns the things around.
“At Mamelodi Sundowns, we were that team before coach Pitso [Mosimane] came, signing players, trying with nothing coming out.

“We came back, we started winning and it became the culture and this is an opportunity for Kaizer Chiefs to do so. But yet again, you are playing an Orlando Pirates team who are very, very difficult. They have got so much confidence going into any game, believing that they gonna win.
“I think that’s an advantage [for Pirates], going into such games.”
Chiefs booked their spot in the final by overcoming favourites Mamelodi Sundowns with a 2-1 scoreline in the semi-finals.
Modise believes that if Nasreddine Nabi’s men approach the final with the same confidence they had against the Brazilians, they will have an opportunity of coming out victorious.
MODISE ON CHIEFS – ‘IF THEY WIN, THEY WILL BE BETTER NEXT SEASON’
“They need to have the same confidence they had when they played Mamelodi Sundowns,” Modise added.
“They had the courage and showed that they want to play and win. When was the last they beat Sundowns? But they did and I think it’s an opportunity to do so with Pirates again.
“And I know if they win, trust me, they will start better in the new season.”
