Former Cape Town City FC coach Vasili Manousakis has shared his thoughts on what he feels has contributed to the club’s current league position this season.
The Citizens have surprisingly struggled in the Betway Premiership despite the quality of players they have at their disposal.
They are currently bottom of the 15-team Betway Premiership log table with two matches to play. CT City are currently the favourites to play in the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs. The club also had three coaches this season, Eric Tinkler, Muhsin Ertugral and Diogo Peral.
“It’s a strange situation because they have made some really good signings,” Manousakis told FARPost.
WHY CAPE TOWN CITY FC HAVE STRUGGLED IN THE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP THIS SEASON?
“I think in fairness, what has set them back is the sale of [Khanyisa] Mayo. One thing about Khanyisa Mayo is that he would score goals,” added Manousakis.

“Whether he was on fire or whether he was just having an average day out on the pitch. You could always count on him to at least get one goal to see you through, and I don’t think they have replaced him. So I think that hit them hard.
“It’s not about my opinion, but it’s about the facts. The league table says they have scored 13 goals in 26 games and that’s half a goal in a game, which is very unlike Cape Town City. They do get into the final third a lot, but I don’t think they create enough chances with the number of chances they get into the final third and of course, it’s about being clinical.”
VASILI MANOUSAKIS DESCRIBES THE SITUATION AT HIS FORMER CLUB AS STRANGE
“There are some quality players that they have signed when you look at Haashim Domingo, Fortune Makaringe, Kamohelo Mokotjo, and now Thulani Serero. [Amadou] Soukouna, we have seen him do some magical things during his time in Maritzburg.
“So it’s a strange situation that with three coaches in the season, they still find themselves in a challenging position. I kind of get a feeling that they haven’t really found that best starting eleven or that best connection and build up some momentum,” he declared.
“So when you have consistency in the starting line-up, you build momentum. You start to do wonderful things together.”
