Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has disclosed the credit he “personally” extended to the club’s former coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
The Portuguese was speaking to the media at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon following their commanding 3-0 Betway Premiership victory over Stellenbosch FC.
The triumph brought the Brazilians within a single point of their record eighth consecutive league title. The championship could be sealed on Tuesday, 13 May, if Orlando Pirates fail to win their match against Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium.
Having played 26 matches, Sundowns maintain a comfortable lead at the summit of the table with 67 points.
Cardoso has praised the work done by his predecessor, Mngqithi, who was sacked midseason.
The former Esperance coach stated that he inherited the club in a good position, providing a solid foundation upon which he could build towards a successful season.
CARDOSO COMMENDS MNGQITHI’S WORK
“With all the respect for Coach Manqoba and the work he did, it was important, obviously,” said Cardoso.
“I think that is clear for everyone to see, where we stand and where we finished. So the credit also goes to my players, the club, and the management.
“Obviously, that was important to build the team from the position where they were, and that is the credit for coach Manqoba.

“I gave it personally to him when we played against [Golden Arrows].”
Cardoso also commended the work he and his technical team have accomplished since joining the club approximately six months ago.
SUNDOWNS COACH – ‘WE’RE BEATING RECORD AFTER RECORD’
“It’s also clear, the job that was done by my staff, myself and everybody together. It’s important that people recognise what we’ve been doing in this league. We took the team to a high, high level,” Cardoso added.
“It’s not only playing fantastic but it’s beating record after record, the goals we score and not conceding much and the points we collect.
“So, I think that it’s wonderful, but we still have two matches to play, and our focus is finishing the season in the right way.”
