Talented attacking midfielder Tshepo Matsemela has opened up about his departure from Magesi FC, having played an important role in helping the team gain automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership.

‘Jomo’, as he is affectionately known, joined the Limpopo club in July 2023 following his brief stint with NB La Masia.

The 29-year-old made a notable contribution to Magesi’s promotion to the SA elite league, participating in 22 matches across all competitions for Dikwena Tsa Meetse. This was during the 2023/24 Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign under the leadership of Clinton Larsen. In those 22 games, he scored five goals.

However, in the ongoing Betway Premiership season, Matsemela faced difficulties in getting playing time at Magesi, as he only featured in four league games.

As a result, the two parties succumbed to a decision to part ways in January this year, which saw ‘Jomo’ joining Motsepe Foundation Championship promotion chasers, Orbit College FC.

TSHEPO MATSEMELA BREAKS SILENCE ON MAGESI FC EXIT

Matsemela stated that there is no bad blood between him and Magesi, citing that his services were no longer needed after the promotion, as the club might have deemed him surplus to requirements to play in the elite league.

“You know, it happens in football that when you move to the next level [get promoted], the team sometimes no longer needs your services, or they have seen better players out there,” said Matsemela in an interview with FARPost.

“So, I have nothing against Magesi. I can’t fault myself for not being there at the moment. It’s football; we move on.

“But I really appreciate the opportunity they gave me to play for them, and winning the league for the first time with them was a nice experience because nobody expected us to win the league since they had written us off.”

Matsemela is currently doing well for himself at Orbit College, where he has already played 11 games, having joined them in January 2025.
