Sundowns join Pirates in Fawaaz Basadien race
Mamelodi Sundowns have joined Orlando Pirates in the race for Stellenbosch FC’s left-back, Fawaaz Basadien’s signature.
The Bafana Bafana fullback has been impressive this season, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists across all competitions.
He has appeared in 44 matches for the Winelands outfit, securing a spot in the national team and attracting interest from the league’s top two clubs.
Interestingly, the 28-year-old recently revealed his aspirations for a dream move in the future. “Definitely, as a player, for your career, that will always be a dream [securing a move to a big club],” Basadien said recently. “For me personally, I’d like to achieve that as well.”
SUNDOWNS AND PIRATES VIE FOR FAWAAZ BASADIEN
With Terrence Mashego poised to leave Sundowns at the end of the season, the recently crowned Betway Premiership champions are looking to strengthen their squad in that position. Mashego’s contract expires in June, although Sundowns hold an option for extension.
Divine Lunga, on the other hand, is also set to be out of contract in June. However, he is expected to remain with the team. Reports suggest that the club has initiated informal discussions regarding the talented wing-back.
Pirates have leaned heavily on Deon Hotto this season, with Paseka Mako’s appearances being inconsistent. Innocent Maela has barely featured, while Yanga Madiba is working to establish himself within the senior squad. Recently, the Buccaneers’ management inquired about the availability of Basadien.
Interestingly, at the beginning of last season, the two clubs – Bucs and Stellies – engaged in a transfer, with Deano Van Rooyen moving to Gauteng. After surviving the 2020/21 playoffs with Moroka Swallows, Basadien signed with Stellies on an initial two-year contract.
Swallows included a 30% sell-on clause in the contract, which will remain valid until the end of June 2025. With the clause set to expire at the end of June, Stellies may be more inclined to sell him afterwards, as they will retain all proceeds from his transfer.
