The end-of-season shenanigans in the Motsepe Foundation Championship continue, as Cape Town Spurs play against Durban City FC under protest.

All the National First Division teams are playing their last matches on Sunday. Durban City FC are on the verge of securing a promotion to the Betway Premiership and only need a draw.

The Urban Warriors, on the other hand, need a win to avoid relegation to the SAFA ABC Motsepe League. But the KZN side has been surrounded by controversy with questions surrounding the eligibility of their player, Saziso Magawana.

MOTSEPE FOUNDATION CHAMPIONSHIP LOG LEADERS IN TROUBLE OVER SAZISO MAGAWANA?

Durban City are being accused of playing the 26-year-old without proper clearance from his previous club, Marumo Gallants, where he spent the past season.

The first protest was lodged by JDR Stars, and the PSL DC is expected to issue a verdict next Tuesday.

This matter has also forced the league to postpone the Motsepe Foundation Championship trophy handover.

THE INFORMATION FROM THE PROTEST LETTER BY CAPE TOWN SPURS OVER DURBAN CITY

FARPost is in the position of the protest letter submitted by the Cape Town club.

“Cape Town Spurs FC herewith lodges a protest in terms of Rule 51 of the NSL Handbook against Durban City FC relating to the fielding of Saziso Magawana [“the Player”], wearing jersey number 17, with registration card number 4696. The Player is ineligible to play for Durban City FC,” reads the letter.

The protest comes after Durban City named Magawana in the starting line-up on Sunday, 18 May 2025.

Magawana has only missed two matches for Durban City this campaign. So far, the club has collected 55 points when the player in question was on the field.

If the KZN-based outfit is found guilty, they could be subsequently docked all points and find themselves relegated.
