Durban City’s promotion party put on hold, CT Spurs get relegated

Durban City FC’s automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership has been put on hold due to a pending PSL case, while Cape Town Spurs were relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The KZN-based outfit sealed a promotion to the top-flight after defeating Cape Town Spurs 1-0 at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday afternoon.

Durban City, formerly known as Maritzburg United, has been the most consistent team in the Championship, making their intentions of wanting to gain promotion clear from the start of the season.

But Durban City’s promotion celebrations are on hold despite finishing the 2024/25 season atop the league table with 58 points from 30 matches. The PSL has put the trophy presentation on hold due to a pending case that could alter the final league standings, forcing the team to pause their jubilation.

The Farook Kadodia-owned team has reportedly played Saziso Magawana, who is allegedly improperly registered. Last week, PSL announced that the matter is currently under investigation and they will put the trophy handover on hold until a final decision is taken on the case.

JDR Stars initially lodged a protest, and the PSL’s Disciplinary Committee [DC] is scheduled to deliver its verdict next Tuesday. Adding to the uncertainty, CT Spurs also played their match against Durban City under protest. They argued that Durban City’s Magawana was ineligible to participate.

On the other hand, Cape Town Spurs have been relegated to the ABC Motsepe League after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Durban City.

However, should Durban City be found guilty and have points deducted, CT Spurs might avoid relegation.

The Urban Warriors have had a dismal campaign in the NFD after being relegated from the Betway Premiership last season. CT Spurs finished 15th on the table, 30 points in 30 games. The Cape Town-based side is relegated alongside 16th-placed Leruma United, whose fate was decided last weekend.
