Aden McCarthy dedicates Chiefs debut to fallen star

Aden McCarthy in action for Kaizer Chiefs

Aden McCarthy’s Kaizer Chiefs debut in Polokwane on Saturday carried a deeper meaning, as the defender dedicated his first appearance to a beloved fallen star.

McCarthy made his senior debut for the Glamour Boys on Saturday, 17 May, against Sekhukhune United at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium. The Betway Premiership tie between Babina Noko and the Soweto giants ended in a 1-1 scoreline.

The 21-year-old played 86 minutes against the Limpopo club, putting in a good showing before being replaced by Njabulo Blom.

McCarthy’s debut for the Nasreddine Nabi-coached side comes after his impressive displays for Bafana Bafana when they played against Malawi in the CHAN qualifiers.

Chiefs’ rising star, McCarthy, helped South Africa qualify for the CHAN tournament finals to be played in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in August 2025 after defeating Malawi 2-1 on aggregate a week ago.

He also played a key role in the Amakhosi DDC side as they clinched the league title for the first time most recently.

Fleurs tragically died after being shot during a car hijacking in April last year. Six suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of the former Supersport United defender. The case is still ongoing.

“Senior team debut – thank you, Lord. It’s been a journey emphasised by John 13:7 and it’s only the beginning, can’t rush greatness,” wrote McCarthy on his official Instagram account.

“Isaiah 41:10 – “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

“Dedicated to Luke Fleurs.”

McCarthy will be hoping to feature again for Chiefs when they play their last game of the season against Polokwane City FC on Saturday in the league. The match will take place at FNB Stadium at 15:00.
