Sekhukhune United head coach Eric Tinkler has made a bold claim about Kaizer Chiefs and their position in the Betway Premiership log standings.

Amakhosi have endured an unpleasant run of form in the Betway Premiership as they struggle to climb into the top eight with one game remaining before the season ends.

The Soweto giants played to a 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune this past weekend at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. This result saw the club extend their winless streak to eight matches in the league.

In a crucial clash against Babina Noko, Chiefs were looking to claim a victory and move out of the bottom half of the Premiership table, but they were unsuccessful.

The Glamour Boys currently occupy ninth position with 31 points from 27 matches, having recorded eight wins, seven draws, and twelve losses. They are level on points with eighth-placed Chippa United, who hold a superior goal difference and have completed their league fixtures.

Chiefs’ league form has been poor, with defeats against Golden Arrows, Richards Bay FC, Marumo Gallants, and Orlando Pirates, and draws against Cape Town City FC, Chippa United, TS Galaxy, and Sekhukhune United in their last eight outings.

Now, the Soweto giants face a critical final match against Polokwane City FC at FNB Stadium in Soweto this upcoming Saturday, 24 May. With Polokwane City just two points ahead in seventh place and also vying for a top-eight finish, it’s a must-win encounter for Chiefs to secure a place in the top half of the league.

WHAT ERIC TINKLER SAID ABOUT KAIZER CHIEFS

Despite struggling for form in the Betway Premiership, Chiefs ended their nine-year trophy drought with a 2-1 victory over Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final over a week ago.

After sharing spoils with the Naturena-based side, Tinkler asserted that Chiefs’ current league standing doesn’t accurately represent their true quality and the strength of their squad.

“We got a point against a team that is full of confidence after the Nedbank Cup win,” said Eric Tinkler.

“I think where they [Chiefs] are sitting on the league table is not a true reflection of the squad they have and the brand of football they’re looking to play.

“So for us, in the last game of the season, we have to go away from home, which is not going to be easy against Golden Arrows, but we need to try and collect maximum points.”
