Mamelodi Sundowns have secured the future of another key player ahead of their decisive CAF Champions League final, finalising the contract extension for defender Mothobi Mvala just weeks after renewing Themba Zwane’s stay.

Sundowns will host Pyramids FC of Egypt on Saturday in the first-leg of the CAF inter-club premier competition final. The reverse fixture is scheduled for Cairo in two weeks.

Having already secured their eighth consecutive league title, Sundowns wrapped up their domestic campaign with a 2-0 victory over Magesi FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday. This allows them to now concentrate on the CAF Champions League, a title they last captured in 2016.

Under the guidance of their new coach, Miguel Cardoso, Sundowns have a chance to reclaim the prestigious title for the first time in nine years.

Interestingly, the Portuguese coach reached the final last year with Esperance of Tunisia, only to lose to Al Ahly, who claimed their 12th title. His experience at that level of competition will undoubtedly be invaluable.

DETAILS ABOUT MOTHOBI MVALA’S NEW CONTRACT

The Bafana Bafana defender has signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until the end of June 2026, with the club exercising the option on his contract.

Mvala recently returned from injury and made a substitute appearance against Magesi on Sunday. He is expected to play a crucial role when Masandawana face off against Pyramids.

The 30-year-old defender joined the Brazilians in 2020 on a five-year deal that included an option to extend. According to Transfermarkt, he has made 119 appearances for the Betway Premiership champions, scoring seven goals and providing four assists across all competitions.

The former South African youth international has become one of the most significant members of Hugo Broos’s Bafana Bafana team, earning 27 caps. He is likely to play a key role in the upcoming 2025 AFCON finals and the remaining 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
