Sundowns reign supreme in Betway Premiership

Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns celebrating

Mamelodi Sundowns have etched their name further into SA football history, securing an unprecedented eighth consecutive league title after a dominant 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign. Here are some images of the trophy handover.

The Brazilians officially lifted the coveted trophy at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday evening, capping off their stellar season with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Magesi FC.

The title was mathematically sealed on Wednesday when Sundowns cruised to a 3-0 victory against Chippa United in East London. However, the celebratory moment of lifting the newly unveiled Betway Premiership trophy was reserved for their supporters in Pretoria. Sundowns become the first team to hoist this particular iteration of the league trophy.

Masandawana demonstrated unwavering consistency and broke several PSL records along their triumphant journey. Their fortress at home proved impenetrable, as they became the first team in PSL history to win all their home league fixtures in a single season.

The attacking prowess of the champions was also on full display. They shattered their own previous record for the most goals scored in a PSL season, netting an impressive 65 goals, surpassing the 56 they achieved in the 2021/22 campaign. Defensively, Sundowns were equally formidable, conceding a mere 13 goals – the fewest by any team in the league this season.

Their dominance is further underscored by their remarkable tally of 24 victories, eclipsing the previous PSL record of 23 wins held jointly by Manning Rangers [1996/97], Sundowns themselves [1998/99 & 1999/00], and Kaizer Chiefs [1998/99] as per Opta Jabu.

HISTORY MAKERS: SUNDOWNS SHATTER PSL VICTORY RECORD

Furthermore, with only one draw recorded this season, Sundowns have set a new benchmark for the fewest draws in a PSL campaign, with the current lowest standing at three.

In addition, the Brazilians achieved a remarkable feat: they defeated every single team in the league at least once. This 100% record against all opposition marks only the fourth time in PSL history a team has accomplished this, with Sundowns themselves achieving it in the 2022/23 season and Stuart Baxter’s Kaizer Chiefs sides replicating it in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons.

Their dominance wasn’t limited to single victories. Sundowns showcased their superiority by achieving league doubles – winning both home and away fixtures – against an astounding nine different opponents this season. This sets a new PSL record, surpassing the previous best of eight doubles.

Beyond league dominance, Sundowns etched their name into the record books by becoming the first team in PSL history to score 100 goals across all competitions in a single season.

This eighth consecutive title solidifies their status as the undisputed kings of South African football, setting new standards for excellence in the PSL.
