What Andre Arendse makes of Neo Rapoo’s Amajita AFCON success

SuperSport United caretaker coach Andre Arendse has shared his evaluation of Neo Rapoo’s performances following Amajita’s triumph at the CAF 2025 AFCON Under-20 tournament.

Rapoo was not the only player who was called up for the SA U-20 AFCON squad from SuperSport. He was joined by his fellow teammates Lazola Maku and Thabang Mahlangu, who also played a key role in helping Amajita win their first AFCON title.

Earlier this season, former Matsatsantsa coach Gavin Hunt once described Rapoo as one of the best right-backs in the country. The youngster went on to prove what Hunt had said about him.

Rapoo led the Amajita squad with aplomb after taking the captaincy from the injured Asekho Tiwani of Mamelodi Sundowns. Tiwani was ruled out of the AFCON U-20 tournament due to a knee injury, which he sustained during Amajita’s first group game against the hosts, Egypt.

The 19-year-old, Rapoo, featured in all Amajita matches, except for the opening group stage match against Egypt, as he joined the squad late due to club commitments.

Arendse admitted it was tough to release Rapoo for the tournament, given his importance to SuperSport United’s squad as they fought relegation. However, they recognised it was a crucial dream for the player to pursue.

“Fantastic player, and I’m very happy for him. You know, we had a discussion that he’s a key member of our squad. He did the job for me before he left,” said Arendse.

“It was important for him to go and realise his dreams. What he has achieved in the tournament was fulfilling a dream, and I’m happy we played a part in that. We will have him back for now, and he’s going to be a big member for us, as well as every single player.

“I mean, I can throw a few names at you when talking about development, the likes of Ronwen Williams, Kermit Erasmus, Kamohelo Mokotjo, and all the other players.”

Arendse continued: “Now, you speak about this group of players that are coming through, which speaks volumes about who we are now as a club and what we stand for.

“You know, we are a developing club; there’s no doubt about that, and the proof is in letting players go to do bigger things. Shandre Campbell is another one who has come through the ranks, so we are very proud of that side of our club.”
